The test piece for the contest was In Memoriam RK by Elgar Howarth and the adjudicators were David Read, John Miller and Alan Morrison.

The Aveley and Newham Band after its success at the Area Qualifiers were rather disappointed to draw No. 1 in a field of 19 British and top International bands. After what has to be described as an indifferent performance we were placed 17 by the adjudicators.

After enjoying several years of good results at this Contest, the pressure of the previous year’s poor result appeared to have taken its toll. We are pleased to be able to try to put the record straight next year when we will again attend this prestigious contest. The eventual winners were Fodens in first position, followed by Carlton Main and Rothwell Temperance Band.
